Setting Up Discounts on Your Store

Setting Up Discounts on Your Store

Discounts, coupons, promo campaigns, sale prices — sooner or later every merchant has to deal with them in order to attract more customers to the store, boost sales or dispose of some slow-moving items.

Set sale prices for products

You can manually set sale prices in percentage or absolute value on individual products in your store.

When you put a product on sale for a lower price, that value will override the default price. So the original price will be shown struck out, and the product image gets the label 'ON SALE'.

Sale price in your store

To show a sale price in your online store, your product details need to include a sale price and the original price, called the "Compare to" price.

To set up a sale price:

  1. Select Catalog → Products on the left-hand sidebar of your Shop dashboard.
  2. Open the product you want to edit.
  3. Click the arrow next to the price:

  1. Add the "Compare to" price. This price must be higher than the actual price you sell for:

And here how it looks on the product page:

Discount coupons

A discount coupon is basically a code that a customer can enter at checkout and get a discount on their order. You can offer your customers a percentage (10% off), fixed value ($5 off), free shipping, and a combination (a discount plus free shipping) on products and categories. Coupons are unique codes that customers can enter at checkout and get a discount on their purchase. A discount code can be a combination of letters and/or numbers or a word. You can use your own codes or let your store generate them for you.

You can also specify the number of times a code can be used, a minimum order amount before the code can be used, the customers for who the code is valid, and which products or categories the discount can be applied.

To create a new discount coupon, select Marketing → Discount Coupons on the left-hand sidebar of your Shop dashboard. Learn more about setting up Discount Coupons.

Automatic discounts

You can set up percent (X% off) or absolute value ($X off) discounts that depend on order subtotal, the group to which a customer belongs, or a combination of the two (a subtotal amount and a customer group) in your online store.

Discounts based on order subtotal can stimulate customers to spend more. Discounts based on customer groups can be used as a reward program for your loyal customers.

To add an automatic discount go to your store admin panel Marketing → Automatic Discounts. Once the discount is set up, it will be automatically calculated in the Shopping Cart during the checkout.

Before adding discounts for customer groups, you need to set up the groups on the My Sales → Customers page.

Bulk discount pricing

You can offer tiered pricing for each product in your store based on quantity. For example, a product costs $10, but if you buy five items, the price will be $9 each.

It’s a helpful tool for merchants who have a lot of products in stock and want to attract customers to buy more items. Discount prices are shown on the product details in the storefront and discounts are applied immediately as soon as the quantity added to the cart changes.
